Based directly on research extracted from the official biography of Dexter Gordon, Sophisticated Giant: The Life and Legacy of Dexter Gordon, this course draws from the extensive scholarly work of Maxine Gordon (biographer, historian, and Dexter Gordon’s wife and former manager-producer) whose award-winning work in oral history, archival research, and the business of the arts and music has led countless clients, students, and mentees to better and more successful lives.
Not surprisingly, Maxine’s biggest success story may have been Dexter himself. Maxine Gordon is responsible for helping orchestrate Dexter’s 1976 resurgence following his return to the United States from Europe, which led to his signing with Columbia Records from 1977 to 1981, and his subsequent rise in the world of acting in 1986, which, after decades of “living the life” and “paying dues” as a world-renowned jazz musician, led to Dexter appearing on the big screen alongside such cinematic greats as Martin Scorsese, Robert DeNiro, and Robin Williams. And in 1987, Dexter triumphantly received an Academy Award nomination for his role in the French film Round Midnight (Warner Bros.).
Maxine Gordon remained Dexter’s wife, manager, and confidant until 1990 when Dexter passed away, and has been his archivist, biographer, and the steward of his legacy ever since. In 2022, Maxine was honored (and is currently serving until May 2023) as an independent Research Fellow and scholar at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University where her work on documenting and preserving the legacies of historic musicians continues.
